The Alchemy of Change

Co-author: Swathi Ram

This book is a reflective account of our journey of building and nurturing a nationwide volunteering movement through which lakhs of young people have engaged in service and community action across India. It emerged from the questions that repeatedly surfaced in our work, and from the lessons we learnt while walking alongside volunteers, communities, and fellow travelers over many years.

Rather than offering frameworks or prescriptions, the book brings together stories, dilemmas, and moments of learning that invite readers to reflect on their own journeys of contribution and leadership.

It explores both the outward work of building communities and institutions, and the inward work of navigating doubt, responsibility, and growth.

Organized across eleven thematic chapters, the book traces a journey from the first stirrings of intent to questions of culture, sustainability, stewardship, and legacy. It invites readers to look beyond what was built, and instead understand how people and relationships were nurtured through the journey.

While rooted in our experience in India, the book engages with universal questions about service, leadership, meaningful change, and the sustaining of purpose over time. Along the way, it also reflects on institution-building—how values become culture, how culture becomes continuity, and how enduring institutions are ultimately built through people.
